In
his illuminating study in church/state relationships, Leonard Verduin
has set forth the evolution of the First Amendment of the Constitution
- "Congress shall make no laws touching the establishment of
religion, nor prohibiting the free exercise thereof" - as the
direct outgrowth and development from the Christian freedom-of-conscience
rationale - that for that for which the Apostolic Church and the
succeeding Corpus Christi martyr Anabaptist churches - strove, suffered
and died! This development is well traced by Verduin, and his volume
has become an additional sourcebook for students of Anabaptism.
